ETA Certificate in India: It’s Importance, Process, & Documents Required

eta certificate

ETA certificate is the permission issued by the Department of Telecommunication to import wireless products. In order to obtain it, the applicant has to get the wireless product tested by the Wireless planning commission.

When it comes to ETA certificate, India is still a novice. While the certification has existed for a long time, most are unaware of it. Through this article, we are attempting to provide as much information about it as possible in a succinct fashion.

What is the Significance of ETA License in India?

Wireless products, by their very nature, work at certain frequencies that enable them to interact with equipment in a particular way. The only reason they are able to do so is they work within a frequency spectrum that doesn’t interfere with the workings of another equipment. The Wireless Planning Commission takes charge to ensure that this non-interference is maintained for every product.

Thus, during the process of issuing ETA license, the Commission runs radio frequency tests on the equipment. If it’s found that the equipment is working within a non-interfering frequency, it’s granted authorization to be imported in India.

What is the process of obtaining ETA certificate for Import?

The applicant has to go through the following steps in order to obtain ETA certificate for import in India:

  • Independent testing at a lab with NABL accreditation: The first thing you need to do is get access to an NABL lab. Submit your equipment there and tell the officials to run Radio frequency (RF) test on it. Afterwards, obtain he test reports and put them aside for future use.
  • Search if you need to obtain the license: ETA approval is granted to the frequency, not to the product. If you find out through the RF test that your product is working at an ETA approved frequency, you don’t need to obtain the license. To know that, conduct an ETA license search.
  • Obtaining authorization from the foreign manufacturer: Getting the ETA certificate is as much important to the original equipment manufacturer as it is to you as an importer. Thus, once you have the test reports, get the authorization for a WPC ETA consultant to act on the behalf of the foreign manufacturer.
  • File the application for ETA approval online: File the online application form for obtaining Equipment type Approval (ETA).
  • Send the product sample to WPC: Wireless Planning Commission will run tests on your product on their end. But they can’t do so if you don’t provide them with the sample of your product, along with the hard copies of your documents and your filled application form.
  • Get Equipment Type Approval: If the WPC finds that your equipment works within non-interfering frequency, it will issue you equipment type approval via email.
