Truth Revealed: Busting Popular Myths About Health Insurance

In today’s world, having your health secured is extremely important. One of the main reasons why this is prioritized is because of the extreme expenses that fall in place along with the medicines followed by it.

And for an employee to survive worry free in UAE, having health insurance is necessary. It has become a strict law in the UAE to have your health insurance secured and this has benefitted the residents in so many ways. The daily wage workers and the employees working in the industry etc will need the right health insurance in place so that they don’t have to spend time worrying about getting their health issues sorted. With this advantage offered by the company towards the employees, it promotes a different kind of improvement in the productivity of the employees as their health life is balanced well. But since there are a lot of health insurance packages rolling in, each measured with different prices and benefits, people end up being confused. And so, because of this confusion, people ended up believing in certain policies that don’t even exist in the first place. Also, they had different notions and ideas about health insurance, some going way beyond what it actually offers.

With the variety of health insurances that are lead out in front of you to choose from, it is quite understandable if you are on the verge of confusion and misconceptions. Which is why, in this blog we will discuss about different myths or misconceptions that have been revolving around from a very long time:

Myth: People who are young and healthy won’t need a health insurance

This is often considered as a common notion, and something that has been etched in almost everyone’s mind. But this is a wrong theory as health insurance taken at the earliest is the best idea to avoid neglections and incur charges later on when you actually get health insurance for yourself. The reason why this has been termed as the most common myths about health insurance is that this thought is instilled in everyone’s mind, especially among those who are young and healthy. But what people don’t realize is, the difference in the payment when it comes to taking one at an early age and later on. The payment is comparatively less and affordable when it’s taken at an early age because as one age, the chances of diseases and other issues are high, so the prices will go high accordingly.

People cannot predict the future and we don’t know what it has in store for us. So in order to steer clear from exhausting your bank accounts when you encounter  any health issues, is  best to have an insurance policy taken at the earliest. Also, when the premiums are lower when you’re young.

Think out of the box and be tactful by getting yourself health insurance as early as possible to avoid paying a huge sum when you get older and are in desperate need of one.

Myth: A health insurance doesn’t provide maternity coverage

Recently in 2013, the Dubai Health Insurance Law ensured that all emirate citizens and nationals should have health insurance, the most basic of which should include maternity coverage. After this law was passed, there was a hike in the insurance plans and thus making the lives of new mothers easy, worrying less about the added expenses spent at the hospital and clinics.

Even then, you must conduct a thorough research about the said insurance because the policies for each company differs and may not be the same everywhere. So make sure that you check the maternity benefits in each health insurance plan, and go forth with the one that is extremely beneficial for you. To be on the safer side, it is preferable to ask your employer who’s providing the insurance or the insurance company, at least 6-8 months prior to having a child to avoid confusion after you get your health insurance. This has to be done, as some policies require an early notice before one can use maternity benefit.

Myth: All health insurance benefits apply from the policy’s very first day

In UAE, most health insurance companies have a waiting period of 6 months or more, when it comes to dealing with any disease or issue. But there might be a handful of plans that help in covering your health expenses from Day 1, even though it’s extremely rare and needs to be thoroughly researched so that you don’t get caught in any trap.

Before proceeding with any health insurance plan, it is advisable to check and re-check the company’s policies so that you are aware of what is included and what isn’t. Also, check the waiting period for each company and settle with the plan that is most beneficial for you and your family.

Myth: A corporate insurance is enough for me and my family

This may be true and beneficial for you on so many levels because there is no added expense. But this will last only as long as you’re the employer in the said company. It’s true that organizations in UAE stress the importance of providing their employees with corporate health insurance, whereas some among them also benefit from their family. Even though this is a great advantage, it is best to stay ahead and on the safer side by securing personal health insurance for you and your family. This will be beneficial even after you quit the job in your organization where the corporate insurance will no longer be valid. So, it’s wise to not depend on the company’s insurance and instead get personal health insurance.

Myth: You don’t have to reveal your existing medical conditions

Honesty is the best policy. One of the important factors you must keep in mind when you get any insurance plan is, to be honest and completely transparent. This is much needed as it will help you in the long run and you can live in peace, rather than being afraid of getting caught.

Although most insurance companies in the UAE will need your medical certificate to ensure that you’re free from diseases or if you have any existing medical conditions, it is best to open up about them yourself.  Because if at all you get caught after the insurance company acquires your medical reports, they have the authority to even reject your claim for being dishonest about pre-existing conditions. Avoid being in this situation, as you will end up wasting a lot of money and time as well.

In the future, always make sure that you do your research before blindly believing in such misconceptions. And, if you’re purchasing health insurance online, then make sure that you go through the policies and conditions carefully, over and over, to stay on the safe side.  Since the costs in the medical field are rising extremely high, it is best to choose the right health insurance in Dubai plan to safeguard you and your family against any emergency situation, medically.
