In the past, there was a severe problem with the batteries of the Self Balancing Boards: Some batteries ignited due to overcharging and even caused fires (see also the section Are kids Segways UK without a handle dangerous?). For this reason, before buying, you should first find out whether the battery is safe. The battery should either be from Samsung or the e-board should have the certificate. In the meantime, Kids’ hoverboards are also tested by the UK cities off-road.
All models presented in our hoverboard test meet at least one of the above requirements and can therefore be used without hesitation according to the current state of knowledge.

You should make sure that the board has sufficient power. Which performance is sufficient depends on various factors? The two most important are your own body weight and the inclines you want to climb with the board.
With regard to the weight, you should look at the permissible total weight of the board. If you are already very close to the permissible total weight with your own weight and the performance of the board is not significantly more than average, then you should rather choose a board with more performance, The same applies if you already know that you are not only want to ride the board on flat surfaces but also want to be able to overcome inclines with ease. Again, choosing a board with a bit more power is advisable. You should also think about the maximum distance you want to cover with a board beforehand. Accordingly, only a board with a sufficient range should be selected.
There are boards with smaller wheels and those with larger ones. Those with larger wheels have a smoother ride and better compensate for bumps in the ground. The disadvantage, however, is that they are also somewhat unwieldy. So you have to decide what is more important to you.

As already mentioned, most boards are very similar in their technical data. The technical data are therefore not sufficient to compare the boards with each other. An additional look at the scope of delivery is worthwhile. For example, there are boards that come with a bag, while other boards have to be bought separately. The scope of delivery is therefore a decisive criterion in our hoverboard test.

In addition to the scope of delivery, we evaluate a hoverboard based on its features. By features we mean certain additional functionality that the hoverboard is equipped with, such as Bluetooth, additional LEDs or an app for the smartphone. If a hoverboard is feature-rich, then it gets a better rating in our Hoverboards test than a board that only offers the standard functionality.

Who hasn’t heard of the home fires caused by Kids Hoverboards? Nobody wants something like that and in order for something like this not to happen, it is important that a hoverboard is as safe as possible. That is, a hoverboard should meet all applicable safety guidelines, and every measure possible to make it safe should be implemented on it.
Whether the board meets certain security guidelines can be seen from certificates, we take this into account positively in the hoverboard test. If the board also has a Samsung battery, we rate that as an additional positive. Safety is the most important criterion in our test.
